Despite her humor in the corridor and the glances she shared with Mr. Darcy over dinner and afterwards in the drawing room as they pretended to not be attuned to each other’s every movement, Elizabeth was scared. This was her step into utter wildness. A step she had first made and not initiated by anyone else. If this were to come to light, she would have to admit to being a new initiate into the tribe of bad girls.
She, Elizabeth Bennet, was a bad girl.
Closing her eyes outside the library and then smoothing the front of the morning dress she had slipped on, she entered the library. This was the place where she would become acquainted with a man’s body. This was the place where she would willingly allow a man to touch her where she had never been touched before.
And it was she who had chosen this place.
The door only opened enough to fit through, she slipped through and carefully closed the door behind her. The latch barely clicked, so gentle was she. Then she turned to the dark room.
It was empty and utterly dark.
Fear and annoyance both entered her. They had agreed to this ungodly time of two o’clock! Did he forget to wind his pocket watch? Did he fall asleep even while she impatiently waited to complete her own seduction?
Perhaps it was she who had been too intense for Mr. Darcy. Was it not him who always pursued her? Her mother had warned her that men did not like girls who were forward with themselves. Mr. Darcy’s hesitance could not be attributed to a reluctance to meet her, but to a distaste of her arranging it herself.
As her eyes adjusted to the dark room and she began to make out the blank silhouettes of furniture, Elizabeth began to laugh at her nerves. He was merely running late.
But if he wasn’t…
Her laughter faded. Of course Mr. Darcy would want to be the leader of the situation. He would not wish to take orders from some country miss. Though perhaps he was not a seducer, he was still a man, and Elizabeth had learned that men would do strange things in order to secure their pride.
Seconds passed. Then a minute. Worry nagged and fears needled until finally she was ready to go back to her room and pretend that Mr. Darcy never existed at all. She would go to Spain and become a nun. She would eventually become used to the habit.
Just as she turned to the door, hand outstretched, a noise alerted her. A footstep in the hall. The smallest touch to the doorknob. Elizabeth quickly stepped away from the door, glancing around her for a hiding space. Surely a servant had not stolen to the library at this hour?
The door opened. A blank silhouette—definitely a man—stepped through and spent as much time as Elizabeth in ensuring the door closed without a sound.
Her heart leapt to her throat, but she held still, terror keeping her at bay.
The man turned and appraised the dark room.
